The sanctity of life is something special to the Lord. In Genesis four, we read about the first murder in the Bible, when Cain killed his brother Abel, and the Lord’s response. 10 But the Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground![1] The Lord does not say his body cries up from the ground, but his blood. The value of each person is so important that Jesus shed His blood to the pay the price for our sins. There is something significant in a spiritual sense about the blood. The worth of each person to God is beyond our comprehension.
Man is Able to Eat Meat
Prior to the flood, humanity were vegetarians, but following the flood, God gave people permission to eat flesh, but with conditions. Genesis 9:4 But you must never eat any meat that still has the lifeblood in it.[2] Raw meat is off limits because life is in the blood as God later tells us in Leviticus 17:11. The Lord also told Noah: Genesis 9:5 And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person’s life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die.[3]
A central theme the Lord communicates is the sacredness of animal and human life. The prohibition against consuming blood emphasizes that life belongs to God. Genesis 9:6 If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings in his own image.[4] As we reflect on Genesis 9:6 we are reminded that God created human life in His image, which is sacred.
You are Important to God
Sometimes, we believe that only certain people are important but we must not be. Yes, God knew all about Noah, but what about me? Scripture gives us insight into how much the Lord loves us as He creates us. Psalm 139:13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.[5]
As you were growing in your mother’s womb, God knew and loved you more than your mother or father. God has a plan for your life, which is all put together before birth. It is a fantastic plan that only God can unfold for you. God also has a calling on your life.
The first part of his call is for you to come to faith and believe in Jesus as your Savior. If you have not responded to the urging of the Holy Spirit to place your faith in Jesus, today is your day. Don’t wait! When we believe in Jesus, this changes us today and sets us on a path to heaven. You are a unique person called by God with a unique plan just for you. Wow! That is amazing to think about.
