The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Guarding against greed isn’t a new issue; it has been needed since biblical times. Our enemy, satan, is always trying to trap us by leading us to believe that our worth depends on material things, power, and other worldly possessions. Once we pursue greed and the desire for more, we realize it’s empty, and our enemy has deceived us.

As we listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit, He calls us away from selfishness and into a relationship with Jesus where we find true fulfillment. We encounter a crucial moment when Jesus shifts from teaching His disciples to addressing a man in the crowd. Luke 12: 13 Then someone called from the crowd, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.” [1]  In this encounter, Jesus uses the man’s question to teach about the dangers of greed.

Guard Your Heart

Jesus’ response isn’t to settle the dispute but to reveal the deeper spiritual issue of the heart. Luke 12:14 “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?”[2] Then Jesus issues a severe warning.Luke 12: 15 Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” [3]

This passage offers a timeless reminder to examine our own hearts, and the subtle ways greed can take hold, shifting our focus away from what truly matters. Proverbs 4:23Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” [4] Guarding our hearts isn’t a one-time action, but an ongoing battle, like pulling weeds daily from a garden. I wish it were different, but if we’re not careful, it’s easy to drift away from God’s plans for our lives.

Jesus shows us that genuine security and fulfillment come not from what we accumulate but from our relationship with God and our eternal perspective. No one in the last days of their life wants to grasp their earthly possessions. Rather, believers focus on our Savior, who gave His life for us. What parent wouldn’t trade every resource they have to save their child? Reflecting on this truth puts worldly wealth into perspective and explains why Jesus died to save us, His children.

We Find True Riches in Jesus

The man wasn’t necessarily poor; he simply sought his due, prioritizing earthly possessions over heavenly treasures. The remedy for greed, as Jesus suggests, is a shift in our values and a radical change in perspective. Jesus tells us that life is not measured by how much you own.” This is a freeing truth that liberates us from the endless cycle of wanting more. It encourages us to find contentment in Christ, to trust in God’s dependable provision, and to recognize that our true riches are spiritual and everlasting.

Guarding against greed involves cultivating generosity, practicing gratitude, valuing relationships, investing in eternal purposes, and seeking God’s Kingdom. By resisting materialism and embracing a Christ-centered life, we discover true abundance and lasting joy in the Giver, beyond the allure of earthly possessions. To learn more, listen here:
