Today’s Scripture & Insight: Proverbs 3:5

When things are going well it seems easy to trust God, but what happens when things are not going well? What happens when you are not sure about the future? We live in a world that seems to be heading toward calamity. There seems to be growing corruption worldwide with the result of people living in darkness. If sin were a weed, it seems to be out of control in the world in which we live.

Although I am describing the world of 2020, the same could be said about the time of Moses. The Egyptians had enslaved the Jewish people and treated them poorly. They had been slaves for 400 years with no end in sight. The Egyptians worshiped false gods and had no time for the God of the Hebrews. Even many of the Hebrews had drifted away from the faith and were not walking with the Lord.

It was during this time that the parents of Moses put all of this aside and trusted God. They brought a child, who would be named Moses, into the dark world in which they lived. This was a world filled with sin, slavery, and violence. Amid all of this, God was at work and He had a plan.

About this time, a man and woman from the tribe of Levi got married. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son.[1] Exodus 2:1-2.

The parents of Moses took a step and had a child. They trusted God. They had no idea the impact their son would have on the world. They had no idea of how their step of faith would make a difference in the lives of so many.

Are you struggling today to trust the Lord for what the future holds? Here are just some verses about trusting the Lord.

  • Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. [2]
  • Matthew 6:25-27 -“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? [3]
  • Psalm 9:10 –Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you. [4]
  • Joshua 1:9 – This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. [5]

When we trust the Lord and place our hope in Him, our view of the world changes. While the world brings chaos, God brings peace. While the world brings uncertainty, God has a plan for each of us. It is He who reveals His plan for each of us in His Kingdom. While the world focuses on this lifetime, the Lord unfolds His eternal plan for us.

Take time today not to focus on the world but look up to Jesus. What is Jesus telling you? What assurance is He giving you during this time in your life?

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.[6] Hebrews 12:1-2.
