There came a day in the life of Peter when the Lord called him to take a step of faith. Luke 5:1One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” [1]
Peter was the professional fisherman; Jesus was a preacher. Jesus’ instructions would have gone against everything Peter knew about fishing. Despite this, Peter disregarded his own thoughts and did as Jesus directed. Remember, Peter had seen Jesus heal his mother in chapter four of Luke. Peter trusted Jesus and went out into deeper water during the time of day when you normally don’t catch fish. Peter’s obedience resulted in a great catch of fish.
When I was 37 the Lord called me into full time ministry which required four years of training. My wife and I both had good jobs and three small children. We had to quit our jobs and move 400 miles so I could go to school. This did not make sense to our parents and the rest of the world. Like Peter, the Lord was calling me and my wife into deeper water. This deeper water would enrich our lives and the lives of our children. This deeper water would impact more people for the Kingdom of God than we will ever know. Peter did not a great catch of fish. He just trusted Jesus. We had no idea we would impact so many people, we just trusted Jesus.
Is the Lord calling you to take a step of faith into deeper water? Trust the Lord and take that step of faith! Take comfort in His word as you follow the Good Shepherd.
- Proverbs 3:5 -Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. [2]
- Psalm 28:7 – The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving. [3]
