Has there been a time in your life when it seems God is not listening? How did that make you feel? Were you able to gain perspective over time? What did the Lord teach you through this situation?
When we encounter difficulties in life, we think the Lord is not listening. If our prayers are not answered as we want, we may think God is not listening. We may even question God. God, why didn’t you answer my prayer? Lord, if you had only been there. Lord, I feel you abandoned me in my hour of need.
The Lord is Always Listening even if We Don’t Think So
A Gentile woman came to Jesus and begged Him to heal her possessed daughter. Matthew 15:23 But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away.
“Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.”
24 Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep—the people of Israel.” 25
But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!” 26 Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”
At this point it seems the Lord is not listening, but He is as we see in the next two verses. Matthew 15:27 She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”
28 “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.
The Lord has His Timing
We live in a microwave culture, and we think the Lord should respond to our prayers in short order. We don’t usually understand the big picture of what God is doing and somehow, we think we need to help the Master Artist paint His beautiful picture.
God did hear my prayers to heal my father and nephew when they had cancer and moment they entered heaven, they were healed. If I were painting the picture, they would have been miraculously healed, but only God gets to paint, not me. Maybe you have had a similar experience. In that case we simply must leave things in the hands of God who knows all, and He knows what is best for all of us.
Psalm 28:7 The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.
