Like a good parent, God calls us into deeper water and out of the shallows of life. When you are a child, you feel safe in the baby pool because you can stand, and the water is not above your head. When you are in deeper water, you must learn a new skill called swimming.
As the Lord calls us into deeper waters, we must also learn new skills that stretch us spiritually. One of the first skills the Lord teaches us as He leads us into deeper water is to depend on Him. As people we want to depend on ourselves, but when we are in deeper water, the Lord becomes our rock to hang on to.
The Lord Called Peter into Deeper Water
Luke 5:4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” 5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”[1]
The Lord is Calling You into Deeper Water
You won’t be able to go into the deep in your life if you aren’t willing to leave the shore. Likewise, you can’t experience the wonderful things the Lord has for you by staying in the baby pool.
Jesus tells Peter to launch out into the deep because the best catch is found in the deep. Similarly, as we mature in faith, we are unable to get all that we need from the spiritual baby pool. If we are willing to venture out and cast the nets in deep waters, there will be a great spiritual harvest awaiting us. Trust and guidance from Jesus are the keys to the blessings of deeper water.
Romans 11:33 Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! [2] Paul expressed the shear awesomeness of experiencing a greater depth in God.
Answering the Call to the Deep
What must I do to experience the deep things of God? Would you like your life to have more spiritual depth than it does right now? It’s God’s desire that we all have an intimate experience with Jesus that is life changing. God has more for us.
This is what happened to Peter, and the Lord is also calling each of us into deeper spiritual waters. To have a deeper experience with Jesus we must spend time in prayer, meditate on God’s word, worship the Lord, and look for guidance from the Holy Spirit. Raise your sails and let the winds of the Holy Spirit take you into deeper water.
