I walked into a hospital room to visit an aging person in our church who thought he was going to die. His main concern was not his health, but would God forgive Him for something he had done 70 years earlier? Although he had confessed this sin many times to the Lord and asked for forgiveness, he still needed reassurance of God’s forgiveness.
Repent of Your Sins and Turn to God and You will be Forgiven
As Peter was on his way to prayer, he walked through temple gate in Jerusalem and by a lame beggar. The man asked for money. Acts 3:4 Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. 6 But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” [1]
Those in the temple were in awe because they knew this lame beggar. They saw him each day they entered the temple. Peter told these people who was really responsible for this healing. It wasn’t him. Acts 3:16 “Through faith in the name of Jesus, this man was healed—and you know how crippled he was before. Faith in Jesus’ name has healed him before your very eyes… [2] Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. [3]
We Can be Forgiven Because of What Jesus had Done
Paul writes in Romans 5:8, “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”[4]The good news is we can be forgiven of our sins as we confess our sins to the Lord and ask for His forgiveness. This is an amazing gift the Lord extends to every person.
Do you want to receive forgiveness from Jesus today? We can pray a variety of prayers to ask the Lord to forgive us. As has been explained, forgiveness is made possible through the work of Jesus Christ. But we can receive this forgiveness by asking God for it, in faith, through prayer.
Prayer for Forgiveness
God, I know that I have sinned against you. I know that I am deserving of being separated from you forever because I can’t make it right. I need your forgiveness. You have provided a way. Jesus came to live a perfect life, die, and rose back to life on my behalf. He paid the price that I owed for sin so that I might be forgiven and enjoy fellowship with You, Father. Please forgive me: I believe in you. Remove my guilt and bring me into new life in your Son. Thank you that I can trust that you will do this. Thank you for providing a way of forgiveness and for accepting me into your family. Amen.”[5]
