It is easiest to understand fruits of faith by comparing the spiritual to the natural. When the fall harvest season comes, it’s nice to see bright, fresh fruit ready to be picked. Some of our apple trees have good fruit, others are bad fruit. Some look good on the outside but have worms inside. We want fruit that is good from the inside out.
Just like fruit trees produce good fruit, faith also produces good fruits. What does this mean? We can have peace in our hearts because we have confessed our sins and believe in Jesus as our Savior. As we grow in faith, we live out fruits of faith, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control that Paul mentions in Galatians 5:22. These fruits are gifts from God in heaven.
The Lord wants you to bear abundant fruit. Jesus explained this to His disciples. John 15:16You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. [1]
The Jailer who Came to Faith Showed Fruits of Faith
Paul and Silas cast out a demon from a woman who was a slave and a fortune teller. Because the woman could no longer make money for her masters they were thrown into prison. Paul and Silas began to sing praises to God about midnight even though they had been beaten and now were in the dungeon with their feet in stocks.
Suddenly there was an earthquake, and the prison doors came open and the chains of every prisoner came off. The jailer was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. Paul called out to him telling them they were all there so the jailer did not harm himself.
Acts 16:29 The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”[2]
The jailer believed and placed his faith in Jesus. Acts 16:32 And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household. 33 Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. [3] Something happened to the jailer, and he began to show the fruits of faith by washing their wounds and caring for them.
