Have you ever had a dream where you felt the Lord was speaking to you? Does God speak through dreams today? Are you praying that the Lord would speak to you in dreams? As you read this it may surprise you that the Lord speaks to people in dreams today and it is not uncommon.
Perhaps the Lord gave you a recent dream you are still pondering. Acts 2:17In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.” [1] The last days began when Jesus ascended into heaven, so we are currently in the last days.
God Gave Joseph a Dream to Give Him Insight into Mary’s Pregnancy
Joseph realized that Mary was pregnant and was going to quietly break off their engagement. He did not realize her pregnancy was the result of the Holy Spirit. God had a plan for Joseph, so He gave Joseph a dream to help him understand and fulfill that plan.
Matthew 1:20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” [2] Joseph’s entire life would change because of this dream that gave him direction.
Some Reasons Why the Lord Gives Us Dreams
Dreams give us guidance and wisdom that can only come from the Lord. Joseph needed the Lord’s divine intervention to reveal to him that the Mary was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. After receiving this information Joseph would take Mary as his wife.
Dreams can be warnings from God. Matthew 27:19 Just then, as Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Leave that innocent man alone. I suffered through a terrible nightmare about him last night.” [3]
Dreams can tell of the future. Pharoah had a dream recorded in Genesis 41:1-32 about an upcoming severe drought.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please come to me in my dreams to communicate to me in a way only you could. Thank You, Your Word is true, and You tell us You will give dreams to Your children as we read in Acts 2:17. Help me to grow closer to You by speaking to me in my dreams. Amen.
