The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Jesus walks on what we fear. This gives us perspective as we encounter the trials of life. What do you fear? You may be afraid of death. Revelation 1:18I (Jesus) am the living one. I died but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave. [1]

Children are often afraid of the dark. John 8:12 I (Jesus) am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness because you will have the light that leads to life.[2] Jesus has power over all things, and while we may be afraid, we do not need to fear as the Lord walks with us through life. The storm may not go away, but He walks through the storm with us. Fear is a normal human experience but knowing Jesus and having peace in the storms of life is supernatural.

Jesus Walks on Water

The disciples sailed across the Sea of Galilee when a sudden storm blew in. The disciples were in serious trouble for fear of drowning. Suddenly, in the middle of this storm, Jesus came walking on water. They thought He was a ghost and were terrified.

Mark 6:48 He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them, 49, but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. 50 They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!” 51 Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed.[3]

Battling Our Fears

In this story, the disciples are battling against the storm. Fear comes to the surface when Jesus shows Himself in a way they had never seen before. We may face a storm in life, but Jesus wants to come and show us a new way to overcome. Jesus reminds us, Don’t be afraid,” He said. “Take courage! I am here!”[4]

The good news is if we find ourselves battling the storms of life, we can cry out to Jesus. Jesus is the way out of fear. He is showing us, leading us, and guiding us on how to overcome. But to overcome, we must keep our eyes fixed on Him. Psalm 27:1The Lord is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? [5]
