The humility of Jesus is demonstrated repeatedly in the Scriptures. It all began when the Lord was born to simple parents in a stable. The Lord could have chosen to be born to society’s elite but chose to be raised by humble parents in simple surroundings. Luke 2:16 The Shepherds hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger.
Jesus’ life gives us insight into the heart of the Lord. The Lord is rich beyond measure, yet Jesus put aside his glory to come to this earth. Jesus was willing to be our Savior and give His life as a ransom for many. When we meditate on the Lord’s humility, it inspires us to live a humble life.
Jesus Rides through Jerusalem Humbly on a Donkey
Leaders of the known world may have ridden a special horse into Jerusalem. But our Lord set a different example when He came into Jerusalem. Jesus showed His humility by riding on a donkey. He also fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9.
Mark 11:4 The two disciples left and found the colt standing in the street, tied outside the front door. 5 As they were untying it, some bystanders demanded, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They said what Jesus had told them to say, and they were permitted to take it. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it, and he sat on it.
Struggling with Humility
Many of us struggle with humility along our journey in life. We can only realize how weak we are when we are willing to be humble. We are helpless to change without the help of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, the Lord calls us to put on the new self. Ephesians 4:22 Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. Our Lord Jesus forms and shapes us as He recreates us to be more like Him.
Jesus is our Greatest Example of Humility
Jesus gave us a model of humility as He went to the cross for us. Before we can go to heaven, we must kneel at the foot of the cross and acknowledge we are sinners. We receive forgiveness and eternal life as we ask Jesus into our hearts. This could happen only because our Lord humbled Himself and gave His life for us. What a fantastic gift!
