The world is dark without Jesus, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. The Father sent His Son Jesus into the world to call people out of the darkness. John 8:12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”[1]
When we follow the ways of the world and our sinfulness, we go down the path of darkness, but as we respond to the call of Jesus, He leads us into the light. The direction of darkness is filled with hopelessness, despair, and being lost, while walking in the light is filled with joy, happiness, and fulfillment.
It Turned Dark as Jesus Hung on the Cross
Jesus was nailed to the cross at 9:00 am, but something strange began to happen at noon when unexpected darkness hung over the land. Mark 15:33 At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.[2]
Darkness is symbolic of sin; as Jesus took our sins, the Lord covered the earth with darkness. Nature testified to the importance of Jesus’ death as another way to communicate to people this was not an ordinary event. Nature shouted that Jesus was dying for your sins as the darkness covered the land. Some people may have scoffed at the darkness that came over the earth while the work of God moved others.
Jesus is the Light
I met a man several years ago who came to know Jesus as he struggled with cancer. He had walked through life in darkness in many ways before a friend told him about Jesus. Before knowing Jesus, he lived a life of hopelessness because he had terminal cancer. When he asked Jesus into his life, joy filled him as the Holy Spirit came to live in him. This man seemed to glow with the love of Jesus after his conversion.
Soon this man was leading other people to Jesus so they could walk in the light. The Lord’s desire for all of us is that we would walk in His light. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.[3]
It is Never too Late to Walk in the Light
Each day people come to know Jesus, from small children to older adults, and begin to walk in the light. No matter our age, we come to know Jesus; there is rejoicing in heaven when someone embraces the Light of Jesus. Jesus died for your sins to make way for you to walk in the light and have eternal life. To hear how the world is dark without Jesus, listen here:
