The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

A humble heart is always thinking of others before themselves. I know a friend who has significant accomplishments in God’s Kingdom, yet he would be the last person to tell you about them. The Apostle Paul tells us the importance of being humble. Philippians 2:Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. [1] What if you prayed for the Lord to help you grow in humility? How would being humble, as Paul writes about, make a difference in your life and those around you?

Mary Had a Humble Heart

When I think of humility, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is an excellent role model. She is very humble when she visits her cousin Elizabeth to tell her the good news that she will give birth to the Savior. Luke 1:48 For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on, all generations will call me blessed. [2] Mary described herself as a lowly servant giving insight into a person of deep faith whose greatest desire is to be a tool in the Lord’s hand. As we lead humble lives, the Lord can use us to do things in His Kingdom we would never think possible.

The opposite of humility is pride. Pride calls us to believe everything depends on us. Faith is trusting in God’s promises and placing our dependence on Him. It takes humility to move from pride to trusting the Lord. Living a life of humility is not easy but worth it.

The Humility of Jesus

Our Lord is so humble that He gave up His home in heaven to come down in the muck and mire to rescue us from our sins. Everything about Jesus coming into this world speaks to His humility. Instead of being born to wealthy, influential parents, Jesus was born in a stable to poor parents. As Jesus grew up, he worked alongside Joseph as a simple carpenter.

Then there was Jesus’ most significant act of humility when He died on the cross for our sins. Jesus suffered physically and spiritually on the cross to free us from sin. He gave everything for you and me, including His life. He put all of us before Himself. Wow! Meditating on what Jesus did for me on the cross always makes me thankful.
