The power and glory of God are on display as we open our eyes and look around. Have you ever observed a beautiful sunset, gazed at the stars of the Milky Way, or studied a flower? There are so many things in nature that seem to be so awesome. Wow! All creation points to a Creator. Psalm 19:1 The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. 2 Day after day, they continue to speak; night after night, they make him known. [1]
There is something about a beautiful rose or watching the waves on the ocean role. This reminds us that we are not accidents but created for God’s purpose. Looking at God’s creation is not the only thing the Lord uses to show His power, grace, and love. His word tells us about the creation of man and the Lord’s great sacrifice to save us because of our sins.
God Showed His Power and Glory to the Israelites
As the Israelites gathered around Mt. Sinai as directed, God spoke from heaven and gave them the Ten Commandments. Yes, before Moses received the ten commandments on stone tablets, the Lord spoke them from heaven. After the Lord spoke, the Israelites were overwhelmed by God’s display of his power and glory.
Exodus 20:18 When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear. [2] The Lord’s great power and glory displayed to the Israelites was not to make them afraid but so they knew the seriousness of His commandments.
God’s Power and Glory in the Resurrection
His disciples thought all hope was lost when Jesus was laid in the tomb. Jesus had told the disciples many times we would die and rise again, but they did not grasp what He told them. Mark 8:31 Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but he would rise from the dead three days later.[3]
When Jesus rose from the dead, God displayed His power and glory. Jesus’ resurrection proved He was God. Because Jesus is God, it means that He can forgive our sins. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, as believers, we are transformed into new creations. God’s word tells us that the resurrection can transform our lives. As we focus on Jesus, we desire to not just know about Him but to know Him as our Savior.
