Seeing through God’s eyes changes our entire outlook. Becoming a parent many years ago enabled me to look at life through an entirely different lens. I had hopes and dreams for my children that they would become people of deep faith, even before they could speak. Our Lord has dreams and plans for us, although we may not understand what He is doing or where He is taking us.
You may be in a season where your path in life does not make sense. I may desire something or want to go down a particular way, and I don’t understand why Lord prevents it from happening. From my perspective, it may seem like I am on the right road, but the Lord sees the bridge out ahead. Only in hindsight or maybe in eternity do we understand how the Lord weaved everything together.
Peter Looked at Life Through His Eyes
Jesus told the disciples plainly that He needed to go to Jerusalem, where he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the religious leaders. He also told them He would be killed but would rise from the dead on the third day. Although the disciples had been with Jesus for three years, they did not comprehend that He was the final sacrifice. From the disciples’ perspective, Jesus should not have to die, and life should continue as it had been. Peter could not see God’s plan because he looked at life through his lens. Jesus then turned to Peter and told him he was looking through the wrong lens.
Matthew 16:22 But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” [1] How often have I complained to God because I was looking through my lens instead of His? Only the Lord knows where we need to go and what to do; we need to walk by faith, not sight.
Looking at Life Through God’s Eyes
Seeing life through God’s eyes is what growing in faith is all about. When I am selfish, I look at life through my lens. As the Lord transforms me, I see others and myself differently. At one time, my life was about my career, but the Lord began to show me life was about Him and building His Kingdom.
Each time we take a step of faith is like taking another glimpse through God’s lens. We may never see this side of eternity perfectly, but our lens changes as we let the Lord mold us. Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. [2]
