The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

In our confusion, Jesus calls again. This is reassuring. Has there been times when you thought the Lord was leading you in a specific direction, and you stalled or lost your way? Sometimes as we follow Lord, we start down the path He has laid out for us, and doubt can set in. I may wonder, “Did the Lord prompt me to do this, or was it just me?”

If this has happened to you, this is not unusual. I believe the Lord continually prompts and helps us along our life’s journey, for He is the Good Shepherd. Jesus tells us in John 10:27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.[1]

Jesus Calls the Disciples Again

The disciples were somewhat confused after Jesus’ death and resurrection because their world had been turned upside down. Jesus’ three years of ministry with the disciples had ended, but what was the next season? The disciples had been called to follow Jesus, but they were unsure. Peter and several disciples decided to return to the Sea of Galilee and fish.

Then Jesus comes to where they are and calls them out of their confusion. Three years earlier, Peter, Andrew, James, and John had been fishing, and Jesus told them to let their nets down for a great catch. It was after this that Jesus called them to come and follow Him. Following Jesus’ instructions brings to memory their first call, where they left everything to fish for people. In the Lord’s grace, He reassured the disciples and called them a second time.

John 21:  At dawn, Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?”“No,” they replied. Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore.[2]

Is Jesus Calling You?

Is Jesus trying to get your attention? How is He reaffirming a call that He has already given you? The Lord is like a GPS who is always calling us back to where we need to be as we listen to the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit. The following verse is one of my favorite passages that speak to the Lord calling us again. Psalm 27: 23 The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. 24 Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand. [3]
