The world chases after many things, but true riches are found in Jesus. When I graduated from college, I went through a time of self-discovery, pursuing the things of this world. A few years later, I realized that my faith in Jesus is where real wealth is. Are you chasing the world? Is the Lord speaking to you today to turn back to him and renew your relationship with Him? If so, He is waiting to hear your prayers.
In the Old Testament, there is a sad story where King Solomon tried to fill the void in his life with the world, only to find out he wasted his time. Ecclesiastes 2:1 I (Solomon) said to myself, “Come on, let’s try pleasure. Let’s look for the ‘good things’ in life.” But I found that this, too, was meaningless… 4 I also tried to find meaning by building huge homes for myself and by planting beautiful vineyards… 8 I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure of many kings and provinces. I hired wonderful singers, both men and women, and had many beautiful concubines. I had everything a man could desire!… 11 But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere. [1]
Simon, the Sorcerer, Thought Riches, Were the Answer
Somewhere in Simon’s life, he had been deceived about the purpose of life. Simon met Philip the Evangelist, who led many people to faith in Samaria. Simon saw the power of the Holy Spirit and wanted to buy its power.
Acts 8:18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. 19 “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!” 20 But Peter replied, “May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God’s gift can be bought! 21 You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God. 22 Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts.[2]
We don’t know if Simon the sorcerer ever repented, but we do know that he had an opportunity to hear the Gospel proclaimed and to give his life to Jesus.
The Riches of Jesus
Jesus clearly shows how valuable each person’s soul is. Matthew 16:26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?[3] When we place our faith in Jesus, we have eternal life, and no amount of money could ever purchase such a blessing that fills us with hope and peace.
