The Lord’s generosity is evident as we reflect on God’s word and His work in our lives. He is generous with His time. He created who you would be before you were born. Psalm 139:16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. 17 How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! [1]
As we pray to the Lord, He is never too busy and listens to us like we are the only person on earth. The Lord provides for everything we can see, touch, smell, taste, or feel because He is a generous God. He has provided this country which we celebrate today.
The Richness of Christ
More importantly, Jesus Christ poured the Lord’s richness on us. Ephesians 1:7 He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.[2] Without the generosity of God, we would still be in bondage to sin, but on the cross, Jesus made a way to save us by paying the price for our sins. In every believer’s life came a day when the Lord generously called you to faith.
Romans 10:12 Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” [3] When we come to faith, the Holy Spirit generously takes residence in our body. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Paul tells us that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. The gift of faith is the most generous gift we will ever receive!
The Lord is Generous When We Struggle
Like most people, I enjoy being around generous people because they are interested in you and want to help you. In life, we sometimes fail or have struggles, but God does not give up on us or abandon us when we have made a mess of things. It is in our struggles that our generous Lord comes to us and meets us where we are to help us. Psalm 40: 1 I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.[4]
The most generous people I know are people of deep faith who gave up their own will to pursue the Father’s will. This is the power of the good news of Jesus to mold and shape us into His special children. Thank you, Lord, for being so generous!
