The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

You are chosen for a purpose by God to fulfill all the plans He has for you. Growing up, I was smaller in stature than almost everyone in my class. When picking teams in gym class, I was usually one of the last chosen. Growing up, you may have had a similar experience, so being chosen by God might seem hard to believe.

What does it mean to be chosen by God? To be chosen means no matter our athletic or academic ability, we were God’s first choice to be on His team. The Lord did not look at us and say, “I am picking you because you are the only one left.” When Jesus walked to the cross on the fateful Friday, He thought of you. When the Roman soldiers pounded the nails in His hands and feet, He intentionally chose to die for you so your sins could be forgiven. The Lord chose you and chose me because of His amazing grace, which is undeserved love. We did not deserve to be chosen, but His great love for us enabled Him to choose us! That is amazing to contemplate.

God Chose You to Transform You

I enjoy fishing, but fish don’t jump in the boat cleaned and ready to eat. When you catch a fish, they are slimy and must be cleaned before being eaten. When we first come to faith, we are slimy and smelly and need to be cleaned up and transformed by the Lord. Like the clay on the potter’s wheel, we are a rough piece of clay until the master potter forms and shapes us.

Paul tells us about the kind of people the Lord wants to mold us into when we have become believers in Jesus. Colossians 3:12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.[1]

As we grow in faith and clothe ourselves in the new nature in Christ, something begins to change us on the inside as we develop fruits of the spirit. You may have been rude, but now the Lord has transformed you into a kinder person. You may have been filled with pride until the Lord showed you the fallacy of a puffed-up person. As we walk through life, the Lord uses trials and other experiences to reshape us into the person He wants us to be.

No One is Like You!

God uniquely created and chose you for a specific purpose He wants you to fulfill. I am amazed God wants to use me to work out part of His perfect plan on this earth. Like the disciples, the Lord handpicked you! The Lord picked you, knowing your strengths, weaknesses, and failures. You may doubt what you can do, but the Lord knows you can always do what He has called you to do.

The Lord will mold you to be kind, tenderhearted, merciful, gentle, patient, and other attributes that will change you and those around you. The Lord does not call the qualified but refines and transforms those He calls. You may be discouraged or wish the Lord had called someone else, but that is our old nature talking. God chose you, and the Lord never makes mistakes.
