The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Who are angels? What is their purpose in the Kingdom of God? Hebrews gives us insight into the purpose and ministry of angels. Hebrews 1:14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation. [1] God created angels who are different from human beings to minister to those who one day will be people of faith. Angels operate in the invisible realm, although they can sometimes appear as people or in their glory to carry out their mission from God.

Angels obey the Lord and serve Him. Psalm 103:20 Praise the Lord, you angels, you mighty ones who carry out his plans, listening for each of his commands. 21 Yes, praise the Lord, you armies of angels who serve him and do his will! [2] God has great plans He carries out daily, and angels help the Lord accomplish those plans. Although we may not be aware, angels are at work all around us.

Bad Angels

God’s Word reveals that satan and the angels who followed him were all good until they rebelled and now work against God’s will and His plans. Revelation 12:Then there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. And the dragon lost the battle, and he and his angels were forced out of heaven. This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels. [3]

As we learn in Genesis three, this ancient serpent satan is an enemy of God and used deception to confuse and deceive Adam and Eve into doubting God and sinning. The Bible also tells us that one day, all the angels that followed satan in rebellion against the Lord will be thrown into the lake of fire.

Good Angels

In Revelation 12:4, the Lord tells us that one-third of all angels followed satan in their rebellion, which means two-thirds did not. These angels are at work all around us in ways we are unaware of. We see these good angels at work throughout the Bible. In the Gospels, the angels are often around Jesus. Angels are present at the birth of Jesus, His temptation in the desert, His resurrection, and will appear at the final judgment.

The two angels mentioned in the Bible are Gabriel and Michael. Gabriel stands in the presence of the Lord. Michael is a warrior who fights against the deceiver satan and the enemies of God. Although angels are powerful, they are under God’s authority, and Jesus is much greater than the angels who serve Him. Because angels serve us, it should encourage us when life is not going well or we feel unloved.
