The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Jesus is greater than angels because He is God. John 1:In the beginning the Word (Jesus) already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. [1] Angels are mighty and fantastic, but the Scriptures teach they are inferior to Jesus. While Jesus is eternal, angels are created beings.

Hebrews 1:4-14 tells us that Jesus is superior to angels, but this is not to disregard angels but to exalt the name of Jesus. The greatness of Jesus above angels begins with His name. Hebrews 1:This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names. [2]

The Name of Jesus Means Savior

No angel died for man’s sins; only Jesus, our Lord and Savior, did.Angels are God’s helpers who assist Him with ministry to humanity. Hebrews 1:14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation. [3] Our Lord is about redeeming men and women, and angels assist Him. Although angels are majestic, we are never to worship them. When people try to worship them, the angels tell them only to worship God. Hebrews 1:And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said, “Let all of God’s angels worship him.” [4]

Jesus is the Son of God

The writer of Hebrews continues to contrast Jesus with Angels, indicating Jesus is the Son of God. Hebrews 1:For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.” God said, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.” [5] The language of Father and Son becomes clear as we read the New Testament when Jesus is born and comes into the world. Jesus was born of the virgin Mary, not a physical union, but a spiritual one. Jesus is Emmanuel, which means God with us. As we think of Jesus as God’s Son, He is superior to angels.

In brief, Jesus is superior to angels because He is God. He died for our sins, and the angels worship Him. Jesus is our eternal King and Creator and sits at the right hand of God. As believers, we live in a spiritual world and have eternal souls living temporarily in human bodies. Our physical bodies will one day pass away, but our souls will live forever. When we place our faith in Jesus, there will come a day in eternity when we will reign in heaven with Him. One day, we will stand with angels and other believers in eternity, praising our Savior.
