Jesus cleanses us from our sins as we place our faith in Him and ask for forgiveness. To cleanse is to wash and clean something dirty. Our sins make us unclean. But we become a new person when God forgives us and the Holy Spirit comes to live inside us. 1 John 1:7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. [1]
The New Testament was written in Greek; the word “cleanses” in this context means continuous, ongoing action. Once we place our faith in Jesus as our Savior, Jesus’ blood keeps cleansing us of our sins. We have many needs in life. Our greatest need is not food or shelter but to receive forgiveness from the Lord. When we come to Jesus and confess our sins, His love washes over us and lifts us out of the muck and the mire.
Sin is often described as a great weight upon us, and when Jesus forgives us, He removes that great burden. Our enemy, satan, lies to us when he tells us we are not clean enough to come to the Lord. As believers, we need to remember that regardless of how we feel, the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.
Jesus Sits Down
Something happened when Jesus paid the price for our sins, which is very symbolic. Hebrews 1:3b When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.[2] In the Old Testament, when the High Priest would carry out sacrifices, He would never sit down because his work was never done.
Jesus is our Great High Priest. He offered Himself as a single sacrifice for our sins for all time, as it says in Hebrews 10:12. After Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice, He could sit down because His work was done. Jesus’ work was giving His life as a sacrifice. From then on, there would be no need for further sacrifices because Jesus paid for all our sins in full.
Cleaned to Live a New Life
Jesus sacrificed Himself to cleanse us of our sins and enable us to live a new life. Our enemy satan lies to us and tells us living a new life is impossible, but it is. Paul tells us otherwise. Colossians 3:10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.[3]
Living our new life in Christ is possible because Jesus cleansed us of our sins. As we begin to live our new life in Christ, we begin to change, although it may seem slow. Ephesians 2:13But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ. [4]
