Jesus sustains everything with His mighty power. Are you worn out or feel you can’t take one more step along your faith journey? Life is more of a marathon than a sprint, and we need to nurture ourselves with God’s Word, prayer, and worship so the Lord can sustain us. Psalm 3:5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the Lord sustains me. [1]
The Lord is our great sustainer of ourselves and everything around us. Hebrews 1:3 The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command.[2] The power to sustain everything and hold things together is beyond our comprehension, but it is easy for God. We weary ourselves when we try to maintain ourselves in life. We must then look to God to see where our spiritual strength comes from.
Jesus Created the Universe with His Mighty Power
Nothing is more majestic than observing the Milky Way on a dark night. We can give Jesus credit for holding creation together. Colossians 1:17 Jesus existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. [3] In a spiritual sense, Jesus’ sustaining gives us strength, encouragement, and protection. Without God’s ongoing sustaining power, the life of a believer would not be possible.
While our strength is limited, God’s strength is unlimited. As people, we may try to sustain ourselves with the material things of this world only to be disappointed and left empty and more exhausted than when we started. When we reach the end of ourselves, we begin to realize we can’t sustain ourselves. When our life seems to be falling apart like a sandcastle swept over by the waves, we need to reach out to the hand of God, who sustains all things. Psalm 55:22 Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. [4] Just as Jesus can sustain the stars and the planets, He also holds us in His hand.
Jesus Sustains Us One Day at a Time
Life can be overwhelming when we try to walk with a searchlight instead of a lamp. While thinking weeks and months ahead is nice, it can also overwhelm us. In Matthew 6:11, Jesus tells us in the Lord’s prayer, “Give us today the food we need. [5] In addition, our Lord also tells us not to worry about tomorrow.
Our Lord will meet our needs today, and we should not worry about the future. Matthew 6:34 So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today. [6] If you are like me, I need to continually focus on God’s Word to remind me where my real strength comes from and how to live one day at a time.
