Why is doing what is right a battle at times? I believe it is always the path of least resistance to give up, look the other way, and take the easy way out. Perhaps you are in a situation where the Lord is calling you to persevere, to keep going even when it is difficult. Paul gives divine wisdom about the importance of doing what is right. Galatians 6:9So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. [1]
In my life, there are times I did the right thing, and other times I failed. You may be tempted to leave a marriage or give up on a family member or life. In retrospect, we often understand why the Lord encouraged us to keep going and do what was right.
Mordecai Did What Was Right
Mordecai was a government official in the Medo-Persian Empire and discovered a plot against the king. What would he do? Would he look the other way or make the hard choice of passing this information to the king?
Esther 2:21One day as Mordecai was on duty at the king’s gate, two of the king’s eunuchs, Bigthana and Teresh—who were guards at the door of the king’s private quarters—became angry at King Xerxes and plotted to assassinate him. 22 But Mordecai heard about the plot and gave the information to Queen Esther. She then told the king about it and gave Mordecai credit for the report. 23 When an investigation was made, and Mordecai’s story was found to be true, the two men were impaled on a sharpened pole.[2]
Mordecai had no idea at the time that doing what was right would play a significant role later in saving his people, the Jews. Doing what is right is often difficult, and sometimes we don’t want to get involved. But when we do what is right, we allow good to win. A marriage is saved, a king’s life is preserved, and other good things happen. Doing what is right is always a choice and in many ways, a test of our character.
We Can Do the Right Thing With Christ’s Strength
As a believer in Jesus, we can do the right thing. When we listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit and obey the word of God, we can do what is right even when it is difficult. Living a life that is obedient to God’s will is not easy. I can’t think of anything that will bless a person more than living in obedience to God and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As we do, we live in the light of eternity and not in the moment.
Each day, life presents us with choices to do the right thing. Resurrection Sunday reminds us that Jesus always did the right thing. He was mocked, betrayed, and denied by His close friend Peter, yet He still did what was right. The people Christ came to save crucified Him, but He continued to do what was right. By His faithful life, you can be called to faith and be a child of God. Praise the Lord! To learn about doing what is right, listen here:
