The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Transformation comes through obedience as we listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Paul tells us the mark of a believer is letting the Holy Spirit guide them so the Lord can unfold His plan for them. Romans 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.[1]

Jesus was attending a wedding in Cana in Galilee when His mother came to Him and said the couple had run out of wine. In their culture, to run out of wine at a wedding feast was shameful. Mary’s words to the servants tell us that she trusted Jesus to do what was needed. Thus, it was Jesus, not Mary, who solved the problem. We all would be wise to obey Jesus and allow Him to address the issues in our lives.

The Servants Responded in Obedience

The servants listened closely to Mary as she directed them to Jesus. John 2:Standing nearby were six stone water jars used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So, the servants followed his instructions. [2]

When Jesus told the servants what to do, there was no question or discussion of His request. They were obedient. When we walk in faith, we obey the Lord even when we don’t fully grasp where the Lord is leading us or understand why. The servants did not expect Jesus to turn water into wine, but He did. As the Holy Spirit leads us, the Lord often does things in our lives that are beyond our expectations and dreams.

Obedience Brings Blessings

As the servants obeyed Jesus, they participated in Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding in Cana. The Lord’s simple requests often serve as stepping stones to life’s most amazing blessings. Although following Jesus’ directions to fill the water jars doesn’t sound like much, the Lord’s greatest blessings often come from our willingness to do something we may think insignificant. Taking a sample from the jugs to the master of ceremonies would have tested the servant’s obedience. They knew they had filled the jugs with water, not wine.

Has the Lord asked you to do something that seems minor? Have you been putting it off because it seems like a little thing? The Lord often rewards those closest to us when we are obedient. When a parent obeys the Lord, the entire family is blessed. In the same way, a child’s obedience rewards their parents. The servants’ obedience to fill the jars with water and then take a sample to the master of ceremonies seemed very simple, yet their obedience blessed all those around them. Set a goal to obey the Lord and watch what He unfolds in your life.
