The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Godly wisdom is not for sale because the Lord gives it to us freely. Worldly people buy and sell things daily, but God is generous. James 1:5If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”[1] While an attorney will charge you for legal advice, the God of the universe will freely give you godly wisdom whenever you need it.

In the book of Daniel, King Belshazzar was confronted with an unusual circumstance when the fingers of a human hand began to write on the plaster wall in front of them. You can imagine the fear gripping the king as he contemplated this. The ungodly king then turned to his enchanters, astrologers, and fortune tellers for wisdom, but they had none.

The King Summoned Daniel

The king’s mother reminded him of a godly man named Daniel. She also reminded him that his grandfather had made him chief over all the wise men of Babylon because he had a spirit of wisdom from God. The king informed Daniel of a reward. Daniel 5:16 I am told that you can give interpretations and solve difficult problems. If you can read these words and tell me their meaning, you will be clothed in purple robes of royal honor, and you will have a gold chain placed around your neck. You will become the third highest ruler in the kingdom.” [2]

Daniel replied in a way that probably surprised the king. Daniel 5:17 Daniel answered the king, “Keep your gifts or give them to someone else, but I will tell you what the writing means.[3] The wisdom Daniel gave the king was from God, and Daniel knew he was only a conduit. Daniel told the king through his actions that God’s wisdom is free as we seek him.

Helping Others as You Pray for Wisdom

Coming alongside someone and praying with them for godly wisdom, guidance, and direction is one of the greatest privileges we can experience. We may not know what to do, but God does. God is so wonderful that when we come to a “Y” in life’s road, He knows precisely what road we should take.

Sometimes, the road the Lord guides us to looks like the wrong road from our perspective, but as we grow in faith, we learn to trust the Lord. Proverbs 3:15 Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.[4] When we gather to pray for wisdom, we see our circumstances differently as the Lord guides us in surprising ways.
