The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

The flood was divine intervention by God to recreate the world. God had created the world good, but sin had almost totally corrupted His perfect creation. Genesis 6: The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.[1]

It had come to the point that in justice to His own holiness, God had to stop the wickedness. If God further delayed judgment, it would prevent His plan for a Messiah. Before demonic evil controlled every human being, God had to intervene in catastrophic judgment. God chose to cleanse by a worldwide baptism in the flood waters.

The Flood Acted Like Chemotherapy

We know that cancer can overtake our bodies and kill us. Chemotherapy can kill these invading cells, but it has severe side effects. God used the flood to rid the earth of evil in the same way we use chemotherapy to rid the body of cancer.

Noah and his family were righteous, and God provided a way to protect them in the judgment. But the rest of the evil world was destroyed by the flood. This was God’s great reset and recreation of the earth. It allowed humanity to continue and, eventually, Messiah to come.

God had put a plan to redeem us from sin immediately after the fall. If God had allowed evil to destroy the world in Noah’s time, Jesus could not have come to redeem us. The flood was a severe but necessary treatment.

God Intervenes to Carry Out His Plan

God has a plan for each of us. Acts 17: 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.[2]

Often, because we are sinful humans, we mess up that plan. Just as the flood was divine intervention, God continues to intervene in our lives. The most significant intervention for humanity was Jesus Christ. Galatians 1: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father. [3]

Jesus’ work on the cross paid the price for our sin. When we confess and repent of our sins, we receive divine forgiveness. God intervenes to restore us to His plan. Romans 12: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.[4]
