The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

The unexpected blessings of persecution are a gift from the Lord to His faithful children. In a world that constantly pursues comfort, acceptance, and ease, the notion of persecution sends shivers down our spines. Our natural inclination is to avoid conflict, to seek harmony, and to steer clear of anything that might bring us ridicule or suffering. Yet, placed within Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, we encounter a radical and countercultural declaration.

Matthew 5: 11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way. [1]

How can suffering, inflicted by others, be a source of blessing? This passage challenges our earthly understanding of happiness and prosperity, inviting us to discover the profound, often unexpected, blessings that emerge when we endure hardship for the sake of Christ. A pastor I knew as a child was imprisoned in Russia for his faith. It dramatically refined him. Only through the lens of faith do we understand how God works in times of difficulty.

Being Refined Like God

The blessings of persecution, though painful in the moment, transform us. Persecution acts as a refiner’s fire, purifying our faith. 1 Peter 1:7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold, though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. [2] When faced with opposition to our beliefs, it prompts us to ask: Do I truly believe this, even if it comes at a cost?

This process strengthens our roots in Christ, making our faith less about convenience and more about unwavering commitment. Additionally, suffering for Christ pushes us into a deep dependence on God. This reliance fosters an intimacy with God that might never develop during times of ease, revealing His strength in our weakness. Furthermore, persecution sharpens our focus on what truly matters—our relationship with God, others, and our eternal destiny.

Our Reward is Not of This World

Jesus calls us not merely to endure persecution but to “Be happy about it! Be very glad!”[3]

Matthew 5:12.This is only possible when we keep our eyes on Jesus and our eternal reward. The suffering we endure on earth is a brief moment in the grand tapestry of eternity. The “great reward in heaven” is priceless, a promise of eternal joy, peace, and glory in God’s presence.

When we accept this truth, we can find joy even in adversity, not because we enjoy suffering itself, but because we rejoice in the One we serve and in the glorious future He has prepared for us. With Jesus in my heart, I look beyond today to tomorrow.
