Trusting God’s wisdom is a move toward spiritual growth and reliance on Him. Proverbs 3: 5Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.[1] Learning to trust God often starts with small steps, and as we grow in faith, we can take bigger ones because we see we can rely on Him. Stepping into the unknown or taking bold steps of faith is tough because we don’t always understand God’s plan.
Perhaps you’re in a situation today where God is stretching you and calling you to depend on Him in a more significant way. It’s important to remember who you’re trusting: He is the God who lovingly created us. As the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, He is in complete control of everything. No matter what challenges you’re facing, remember that His love and care for you are truly deep and unwavering. Life may be full of uncertainties, but one thing you can always count on is that God’s wisdom surpasses our understanding, offering guidance and comfort.
Zechariah Struggled to Trust God
When Zechariah was a priest serving in the temple in Jerusalem, the angel Gabriel visited him. The angel told Zechariah that the Lord had heard his prayer, informing him that his wife Elizabeth would give him a son, and he was to name him John. Because Zechariah was old and Elizabeth was beyond childbearing age, he had doubts.
When he asked the angel how he could be sure this would happen since he and his wife were both old, Gabriel rebuked him. Luke 1:20 “But now, since you didn’t believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time.” [2]
Zechariah returned home after finishing his duties at the temple, and soon after, his wife became pregnant. You can imagine how Zechariah’s trust in the Lord grew because what the angel said came true. In addition, his muteness was an ongoing reminder of learning to trust the Lord.
The Peace That Comes From Trusting God’s Wisdom
Zechariah remembered the angel saying he wouldn’t be able to speak until the child was born, and now that time had come. When the baby was eight days old, everyone gathered for the circumcision ceremony, which was also the naming ceremony. Those who were there wanted to name him Zechariah after his father, but Elizabeth indicated his name was to be John.
When the crowd complained, they made gestures to ask the father. Luke 1:63 He motioned for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s surprise he wrote, “His name is John.” 64 Instantly Zechariah could speak again, and he began praising God. [3]
When we choose to let go of controlling everything and begin trusting God’s wisdom, we find a peace that truly goes beyond what we can understand (Philippians 4:6-7). Even during difficult times, we can feel confident knowing that God is always faithful and working all things out for our good (Romans 8:28). To learn more, listen here:
