The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Faith amid desperation is the story that unfolds in Mark 5:24-29. We encounter two powerful stories woven together—Jairus’ dying daughter and a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve long years. As Jesus walked through the crowd on His way to Jairus’ home, the suffering woman quietly approached Him from behind. She believed that if she could only touch His cloak, she would be healed.

Her faith was simple but deep. After years of pain, disappointment, and loneliness, she still believed Jesus could do what no one else could. When she touched His garment, her body was instantly healed. In that moment, what seemed impossible suddenly became real.

This story reminds us that wholeness begins with faith in Jesus. The woman had tried everything the world could offer, yet true healing came only when she reached out to the Savior. He did not allow the woman to disappear back into the crowd unnoticed. Instead, He called her forward and affirmed her faith, restoring her dignity and identity. Jesus was healing not only her physical condition, but also the emotional and spiritual wounds she carried.

When Hope Seems Lost

While Jesus was talking with the healed woman, news came that Jairus’ daughter had died. From a human point of view, the situation seemed hopeless. When Jesus reached the house, mourners were already crying and wailing. Mark 5:39 He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” 40 The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying.[1]  The crowd saw death as the final word. But Jesus saw something greater.

Mark 5:41 Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” 42 And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.[2] What everyone believed was impossible was transformed by Christ’s authority. When we see closed doors, Jesus sees opportunities for His power to be revealed. When we think a situation is beyond repair, He reminds us that nothing is beyond His reach.

The Greater Miracle of Wholeness

The miracles in this passage point us toward an even greater truth. Every healing Jesus performed was a glimpse of the deeper restoration He came to bring to the world. Ultimately, true wholeness is rooted in Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection. At the cross, Christ took upon Himself the brokenness of humanity—our sin, our suffering, and our separation from God. Through His sacrifice, He removed the barrier between God and us.

Through His resurrection, Jesus defeated death and opened the door to new life. He not only heals bodies; He restores souls and transforms lives. When my father faced inoperable cancer, God walked through this impossible situation with him and healed him in heaven, where he was made whole. My father had faith amid desperation. The Lord uses many ways to turn the impossible into the possible. To learn more, listen here:
