A few years ago, at work I was visiting with a co-worker who was only 51 years old. Later that morning he did not feel well and went home. There he suddenly died of a heart attack. Like my friend, we also have a date with eternity. It may arrive unexpectedly or after a long illness. In our story of Elijah, the Lord had told him that he was not only stepping into eternity, but heaven itself.
2 Kings 2:1 When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were traveling from Gilgal… 11 As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven.
What about you? Are you prepared for eternity? Do you have faith in Jesus as your Savior so when your last day comes you will go to heaven? (If not, ask Jesus to forgive your sins and be your Savior.) Heading into eternity can be a traumatic event but having faith in Jesus as your Savior will give you peace to take the next step.
Philippians 4:6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Paul also writes about how wonderful heaven will be in 1 Corinthians 2: 9 That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”
This gives us just a glimpse of what Elijah experienced as he entered heaven. We can also look forward with hope as believers.
