One day Jesus was at a wedding and His mother informed him the wine had run out. John 2:1The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. 3 The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” [1]
The wine ran out unexpectedly and the dryness of life can sneak up on us when we are not aware of the problem. It is interesting that the mother of Jesus, Mary, was more aware of their situation regarding the wine than the groom. Often, other people can see the dryness in our life long before we do. Mary’s response was not to complain, but to help, which is a great model for any of us.
Dry Seasons
Have you ever been through a dry season when you desperately needed a time of refreshment? If so, how should you refresh yourself when you are being overwhelmed? I met a man one day in our church who was overwhelmed, and in the driest season of his life. I can still picture him as he walked down the aisle with the help of crutches. His life choices had taken him into the deserts of life, but now, facing a life-threatening illness, the Lord drew him to Himself. The Lord would become his oasis, his refreshment, and his Savior.
To overcome a dry season in life we need to recognize that God is aware of our problems. As we listen to the Lord, He will guide us in what to do. We are much like my friend who was coming to the Lord on crutches. That is a good picture how we can also come to God with just small steps. It takes time to become refreshed and that is okay.
Run to the Lord
Take time to pray and open God’s word even if it is just a few minutes. Don’t be discouraged. As you draw near to the Lord, He will give you a thirst for His word in the amount that is right for you. Our spiritual life is a journey and our Lord loves to walk along that journey with you. As we continue to walk with the Lord, refreshment will come almost unexpectedly.
Matthew 11:28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” [2]
