Jesus endured the cross for you. Not only did He suffer physically but spiritually as all our sin was poured out on Him. When Jesus was crucified the only disciple at the base of the cross was John. There werefaithful women including His mother Mary there, also. They were all eyewitnesses to what Jesus endured in the physical. But we, as humans, have no idea of the emotional and spiritual pain Jesus endured on the cross. He endured so we could be forgiven.
Jesus Endured the Cross Because of Love
Sometimes we don’t think of the depth of our Savior’s love and take it for granted. In Holy communion the Lord calls us to remember what He did because we so soon forget. He wants us to remember so we can praise Him and give Him thanks.
Luke 22 19 He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you. [1]
As we remember we look up to our Savior who gave His life to rescue us so we could be called into His Kingdom. When we are called into His Kingdom, we are also able to be forgiven and free from the sin that entangles us. Hebrews 12:2bBecause of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. [2]
The Cross, Shame, Joy, and Honor
Crucifixion was a painful, shameful way to die, yet Jesus endured the cross for you because He loves you. In fact, Jesus endured the cross because of the joy of seeing us healed from sin and for that God the Father honored Him.
1 Peter 2:24 He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. [3] The work of Jesus on the cross allows us to be healed from sin and live in relationship with the God of the universe.
Do you need to be healed today? Are you hurting and have nowhere to turn? Look no further than our Savior who is extending His arms to you like a loving father to his son or daughter.
