I always say that it’s not if I break a promise, it’s when I break a promise. As a fallible human, I will fail at some point. But God is not like that, God keeps His promises. We know we don’t have to teach our kids to be naughty. They learn all by themselves and they break promise. As adults we may be a bit smoother about breaking our promises, but we still have the same sinful nature.
We are told repeatedly in the Bible that God always keeps His promises. Joshua 21:45Not a single one of all the good promises the Lord had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled; everything he had spoken came true. [1] God always keeps His promises gives us assurance and hope.
The Lord Reaffirmed the Promises He made to Abraham to Jacob
God gave Jacob a dream where He repeated the promises that He had made to Jacob’s grandfather and father.
Genesis 28:14 Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth! They will spread out in all directions—to the west and the east, to the north and the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants. 15 What’s more, I am with you, and I will protect you wherever you go. One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.” [2] Not only does God make us promises but affirms them and keeps them just like He did with Jacob.
Three of my Favorite Promises the Lord has Made to Us
John 1:12 (The promise of salvation) But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.[3]
Romans 8:38 (The promise of unconditional love) And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.[4]
Phil. 4:13 (The promise of special strength through Christ) For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. 14 Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty. [5]
Remember God’s promises are sure. Look for God’s promises as you read Scripture. Write them down. Say these out loud to reassure yourself of their truth. God is our rock and refuge, but during rough times we need to be reminded of God’s faithfulness. You can put your hope in God and live a life of peace.
