The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Are angels real? This is a topic many people wonder about, especially if you are not familiar with God’s word. There is nothing wrong with asking questions because that is how we learn. All of us at one time were at the beginning of our spiritual journey. God created angels before man and they are real. The Bible does not say how long before man they were created.

Hebrews 1:14Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation. [1] The writer of Hebrews tells us that angels play a very important role in the life of those who come to faith. They operate in the invisible realm but are as real as we are.

A fallen angel in the form of a serpent tempted Adam and Eve. The first time a good angel is shortly after this. A Cherubim, a type of angel, guards the Garden of Eden so Adam and Eve do not enter it after being driven out because of their sin. Genesis 3:24After sending them out, the Lord God stationed mighty cherubim to the east of the Garden of Eden. And he placed a flaming sword that flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. [2]

The angels we read about in God’s word are strong male warriors whose presence often frightened those they encountered including the shepherds who were told that Jesus was born. They are powerful. 2 Kings 19:35 That night the angel of the Lord went out to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers.[3] If you are a believer, they are a vital part of your life doing things you are not aware of.

An Angel Appears to Cornelius

During a time of prayer, an angel appeared to Cornelius to give him divine guidance. This is a purpose for angels as the Hebrew passage above mentioned

Acts 10: 30 Cornelius replied, “Four days ago I was praying in my house about this same time, three o’clock in the afternoon. Suddenly, a man in dazzling clothes was standing in front of me. 31 He told me, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your gifts to the poor have been noticed by God! 32 Now send messengers to Joppa, and summon a man named Simon Peter. He is staying in the home of Simon, a tanner who lives near the seashore.’

33 So I sent for you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here, waiting before God to hear the message the Lord has given you.” [4]

Angels Protect You

It is wonderful to contemplate that the Lord sends angels to protect His children that know Him or will someday know Him as Savior. Like a mother watching over a small child, we are never out of sight of God’s protecting angels. Psalm 34:For the angel of the Lord is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! [5]
