What if we would look to God when there is bad news? How does the Lord want us to work through bad news in the best way? The way we deal with issues of life will have large ramifications as we move forward.
As we journey through life it is only a matter of time before we are faced with bad news. It could be an illness, loss of a job, a failing grade in school, a relationship difficulty, or other problems. No matter the situation, the Lord calls us to turn to Him with our problems whether they are large or small. The Lord knows we are not designed to carry burdens and over time they will crush us down without His help. Psalm 46:1“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”[1]
Nehemiah was Faced with Bad News
Nehemiah had a comfortable job being a cupbearer for the King and all was going well. Then he received very bad news about his people in Jerusalem. What would he do? Nehemiah feels helpless but knows who can help. The Lord!
Nehemiah 1:2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came to visit me with some other men who had just arrived from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had returned there from captivity and about how things were going in Jerusalem. 3 They said to me, “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.” 4 When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven. [2]
Turning to the Lord in Our Time of Need
Perhaps you are currently in an overwhelming situation. You may wonder what to do. Many times in life we don’t know what to do, but God does. The Lord can use our situation to enable us to realize He is always there to help us in our desperation. We just need to turn to him.
Psalm 18: 6 But in my distress I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears. [3] The Lord not only hears our cry, but He also begins to take action. Psalm 40:2He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. [4] If you are faced with a situation in which you are struggling, seek out the Lord in prayer and take His hand so He can lift you up!
