Letting your light shine so others can see the love of Jesus in you is a great blessing to others. As we allow our light shine, we are a lighthouse of hope and encouragement for those around us. Have you ever been impacted by another person who was Jesus with skin on? How did the Lord use that person to help you on your faith journey?
I remember when I was in my mid-twenties, and I joined a church that was new to me. There was a man who let the love of Jesus show through him on our church usher team. He was the same age as my father and acted as an informal mentor to me. He was someone to look up to who demonstrated the Christian life through words and deeds. His life was a living sermon.
Jesus Tells Us the Importance of Letting our Light Shine
As Jesus was teaching the people around the Sea of Galilee, He told them several parables to help them understand God’s Kingdom. In one of the parables, Jesus told them about a lamp. Mark 4:21Then Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine.[1]
We reflect the light of Jesus through our words and actions when we truly live as His followers. No one would light a lamp and then hide it; that would defeat the lamp’s purpose. We can’t let our light shine by blending in. How will the broken world come to know Him if we hide our light as believers in Jesus? God blesses us to be a blessing to others.
Let Your Life Shine in the Darkness
The dictionary defines light as something that makes things visible or affords illumination:[2] When there is light, we can see the hidden items in the darkness. The light chases away the darkness in an instant. As believers in Jesus, the light of the Holy Spirit lives in us.
John 8:12“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”[3]
The light that you have inside can show the glory of God to others. You may be the one example of God for someone in your life. So, think of all the people the Lord wants to reach through you as you let your light shine. When you consistently let your light shine during the week, you never know who you will impact.
