Is demon possession real? This is a question many people wrestle with and find hard to believe. Perhaps this is a question you are wrestling with today. If so, the Lord wants to answer your request. When Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee to the area of the Gerasenes He was met by a demon-possessed man. Mark 5:2When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him.[1]
We live in a supernatural world and many things we don’t understand, but simply must walk in faith. Walking in faith is believing what God tells us in the Scriptures even when don’t understand and can’t figure it out. In the Bible, we learn that Jesus has authority over demons.
Jesus Encounters a Man Filled with Demons
Our text tells us that a person can be possessed by multiple demons. Mark 5:6 When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. 7 With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.” 9 Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name? ”And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.”[2] The demons had to come out and obey Jesus’ authority.
Warning! Occultic Dangers
Demons are just as real today as they were when Jesus’ ministry took place on earth. Demons are dangerous, destructive, and powerful. While it is important to recognize their evil activity and know they are real, we should avoid any curiosity about them or involvement with the occult. God speaks about this in Deuteronomy 18:10-12. Dabbling with the occult can open doors that give the demonic realm permission to attack you. These doors can also be closed if we repent of those sins to close those doors. If you have opened any doors into the occult such as Ouija boards, fortunetelling, etc. take time to repent of those sins and ask Jesus to forgive you.
Demons’ Destiny is Eternal Hell
During the ministry of Jesus, the demons acknowledged their eternal fate. They will face judgment and torment. We read in an account of this same story where the demonic speaks to Jesus. Matthew 8:29 They began screaming at him, “Why are you interfering with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before God’s appointed time?” [3]
While demons face eternity in hell, those who place their faith in Jesus will have eternal life. Ref. John 3:16. Is demon possession real? To find out more, listen here:
