Jesus has authority over evil spirits. It is comforting to know the Lord is all-powerful. The demonic come against Jesus repeatedly in the Gospels and Jesus rebuked and drove them out.
Who Are the Demons or Evil Spirits and What is Their Destiny?
The Bible tells us that there is a wicked force of evil spirits in the world called demons. Originally, God created them as holy angels. Their home was heaven and they served and worshiped God. But they became evil through pride and rebellion. Satan, also known as the devil, led one-third of the angels into evil in his prideful rebellion. As a result of their rebellion and pride, they were cast out of heaven by God Himself.
They were created by God to be eternal beings. In the final judgment, they will be thrown into the lake of fire where they will be tormented forever. They cannot be redeemed, forgiven, or repent. Today we want to examine two different instances where Jesus’ authority over the demonic was demonstrated.
Jesus Commands Demons to Leave a Man
Jesus sailed with the disciples to the Garasenes on the other side of the Sea of Galilee where He demonstrated his authority over the demons who possessed a man.
Mark 5:9 Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?” And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.” 10 Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. 11 There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. 12 “Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.” 13 So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. [1]
Jesus Commands a Demon to Leave a Man in Capernaum
A demon-possessed man began to verbally assault Jesus as He taught in a synagogue in Capernaum. The demon learned that Jesus’ authority was greater than his. Jesus cast out the demon from the man and did so without harming the man.
Luke 4:31 Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught there in the synagogue every Sabbath day. 32 There, too, the people were amazed at his teaching, for he spoke with authority. 33 Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon—an evil spirit—cried out, shouting, 34 “Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further. [2]
