The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

As Zechariah finishes his prophecy, he tells how Jesus guides us to the path of peace. Luke 1: 78 Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us,79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace. [1] The path refers to a traveler’s way or a journey of faith.

What is Peace?

Often we think of peace as an absence of war. The people of Zechariah’s day knew of the Pax Romana, a state of relative lack of war beginning with the reign of Augustus. But this kind of peace is earthly. God wants to bring us greater peace.

When God speaks of peace of faith, “it is the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ. So, as believers, we fear nothing from God and can be content with our earthly lot.”[2] This kind of peace implies the stability of a relationship between God and us.

God Wants to Give Us Peace

People naturally seek peace; unfortunately, we don’t always look to God. Jeremiah 6:13b From prophets to priests, they are all frauds. 14 They offer superficial treatments for my people’s mortal wound. They give assurances of peace when there is no peace.[3]

Just as Zechariah prophesied, Jesus came to bring us peace. Romans 5:1Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.[4] The little baby born in Bethlehem would grow to be a man who would die on the cross for our sins, then be raised from the dead. Jesus paid the blood price for our sins. To receive the peace of forgiveness, we simply repent, and God gives us a second chance.

Jesus’ peace even guides us through the troubles of this life. John 16: 33 I (Jesus) have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.[5] Jesus is the best Christmas gift ever!
