The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

When God surprises us, it is something we don’t expect. Have you ever been surprised by the Lord? How did that affect you? I believe we all like good surprises, whether we are kids or adults.

One of my cousins and her husband tried to have a child for many years. Later she went through cancer treatment, and they gave up any expectations of having a child. Then something miraculous happened when she was forty-five years old. It was an unexpected gift from the Lord. She became pregnant with a baby girl, who is now a normal three years old.

An Unforgettable Miracle

In the Christmas story, the shepherds were going about their daily work when something unexpected happened. Luke 2; That night, there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David![1]

Can you imagine how surprised the shepherds were to see angels for the first time that evening? The angel’s glory would have glowed like a brilliant light in the darkness as he spoke to them in their language. As they looked up at the angel of the Lord, they would remember this image for the rest of their lives. The next thing that surprised them was the angel’s message that the Messiah was born in Bethlehem. After hearing this message, the shepherd rushed to visit the newborn Savior. This was a surprise for Mary and Joseph.

The Lord Surprises Us Today

We only need to be observant to realize the Lord surprises us regularly. I was outside in the evening for a couple of days and could clearly see the Milky Way in all its majesty. It was a wonderful surprise to see such brilliance of so many stars in God’s creation.

As we become more aware of God working around us, His wonders become more evident. A beautiful flower, an answer to prayer, a word of encouragement, or realizing the Lord is changing you for the better can all be lovely surprises. God’s wonders bring smiles to our faces and a greater appreciation of God’s love and interaction with His children. These are a reason to worship Him.
