The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Angels are amazing and give us a glimpse into the spiritual realm we don’t usually see. Have you ever encountered an angel? This is an interesting question because, as believers, we meet angels regularly, although we may not be aware of it. We can’t see angels unless they make themselves visible, but that does not mean they are not all around us.

The writer of Hebrews gives us an understanding of how essential angels are for believers in Jesus. Hebrews 1:14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation. [1] As people, we are in a spiritual battle, and angels protect us from unknown dangers.

The Women Encountered Angels at the Tomb of Jesus

As Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to the tomb of Jesus, they were downcast because Jesus had been crucified. In their mind, they thought Jesus was dead and did not realize what awaited them.

Matthew 28:Suddenly, there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint. Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come see where his body was lying. And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.” [2]

Can you imagine the angel’s impact on the women who were mourning the death of Jesus? What would the women have thought when they found out He had risen? God gave the task of announcing Jesus’ resurrection to a servant angel. The women were honored to be the first to hear this special message.

Angels Assigned to Us

You may not realize that angels are on assignment all around you, watching over you because you are precious to God. They may be assigned to give us messages like the women in our story. They may care for us in other ways as God tasks them. God’s children are incredibly special to Him and receive special attention. We can be thankful that angels are all around us as we journey through life because they are an extension of the ministry of God in this world.
