When we don’t understand God’s plan, it should not stop us from trusting Him. It is often only in retrospect that we realize why God unfolded His plan as He did. Sometimes, we may never understand God’s plan for our lives on this side of eternity, and we must be okay with that.
When the Angel Gabriel came and told Mary she would have a child by the Holy Spirit, I don’t think she fully understood all that the Lord had for her moving forward. But Mary said something profound that gives insight into her faith and trust in the Lord. Luke 1:38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her. [1] More often than we realize God, we don’t comprehend the impact of God’s plans for our lives and how they positively affect us and those around us.
The People of Jesus’ Day Wanted a King
The Biblical scholars, as well as the people in the days of Jesus, did not comprehend God’s fantastic plan to rescue humanity from their sins. After the feeding of the 5000, the people didn’t understand Jesus came to be their Savior, not an earthly king. John 6:14 When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, Jesus is the Prophet we have been expecting!” 15 When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself. [2]
During Holy Week, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey, and the people still hoped He would be their king. Luke 19:37 When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen. 38 “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!” [3]
The people praised God for giving them a king but did not understand that Jesus was a different kind of king. They thought Jesus would remove the Romans and be a national leader. The people had turned a deaf ear to the prophets and were blind to Jesus’ true mission to humanity.
Trusting God as He Unfolds His Plan
Faith allows us to follow God even when we don’t understand His plan. It is vital for moving forward in our lives. When we trust God, we must rely on Him to lead us. He truly is our Shepherd as we follow the voice of the one who loves us. Scripture embodies trusting God even when we don’t grasp what He is doing. Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. [4]
