The women were right, and it was a great surprise to Peter, who raced to the tomb of Jesus and found it empty, just as they said. The angels at the tomb had told the women that Jesus had risen from the dead! As they recalled what Jesus had told them earlier, they rushed back from the tomb to tell the disciples. So, women were the first messengers of the resurrection.
Despite their low societal status, they showed courage by sharing the unbelievable news. Luke 24:11 But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it. 12 However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then, he went home again, wondering what had happened. [1]
This passage suggests that we, too, can have the courage to share the good news of Jesus regardless of our perceived inadequacies. We can’t make other people believe, but we can share the message of Jesus in a winsome way.
Curiosity Leads to the Truth
Despite his doubts, Peter’s decision to investigate the empty tomb was a step of faith. More than one person has doubted Jesus, only to take a step of faith by reading God’s word, and becoming a believer. Today, you may have doubts about certain parts of the Christian faith. There is nothing wrong with seeking the Lord through His word, prayer, the work of the Holy Spirit, and wise counsel to resolve issues confronting us.
The Lord gives us a promise. Proverbs 8:17I love all who love me. Those who search will surely find me. [2] As he entered the empty tomb, Peter’s heart must have leaped for joy that there was a possibility that Jesus was alive. The truth of the resurrection would turn his world upside down again.
Peter Encounterd the Empty Tomb
As Peter looked at the empty tomb, he encountered the truth about God’s word. Jesus rose from the dead just as He said He would. Encountering the truth of God’s word is life-changing. As we meditate on God’s word, He will take us deeper, revealing life-changing things. The Christian life is a journey that unfolds one day at a time, each day being a possible adventure with the Lord. An encounter with Jesus can make a difference you only dreamed about.
God changed the women’s hearts at the tomb, giving them new perspective and direction. As we encounter Jesus, it is often what we don’t expect. When we meet Jesus, it frequently shifts our focus and redirects us to what is truly important. For Peter and the women who went to the tomb, Jesus forever changed their lives. As you encounter Jesus, He can do the same for you.
