People, including Biblical scholars, may be struggling to believe God’s Word. We are all in a spiritual battle, and our enemy, satan, works against every person, trying to deceive them into thinking they can’t trust God’s Word.
But what does God’s word say about faith? How does what we believe affect our belief in the word of God? Hebrews 11:1Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.[1] Faith starts with believing in God’s character, that He is who he says he is. In addition, faith culminates with believing in God’s promises that He will do what He says He will do.
We demonstrate true faith when we believe God will fulfill His promises even though we don’t see any evidence.[2] When I approach Scripture through the lens of faith, I let the Lord unfold the passage with eyes of trust. In addition, as we study God’s word, we can pray and ask for insight that only comes from Him.
Bible Passages That Take Faith
Many things about the Christian life are supernatural, such as coming to faith, being led by the Spirit, and going to heaven as a believer when I die. Faith is the bridge that allows us to believe what God says and is the building block to believe what is hard to understand. The introduction to the flood story is no different. Genesis 6:1When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose.[3]
The Hebrew phrase “sons of God” is used three times in the Old Testament (Job 1:6, 2:1, 38:7), always referring to fallen angels. Genesis 6:4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man, and they bore children to them. [4]
The race of beings resulting from this union was the Nephilim, who were not truly human. Many scholars have tried to explain this away because it sounds like science fiction versus trusting what God is saying. We need to remember that God gives His word to us not to answer every question we have but to reveal Himself to us to have a relationship with Him.
Pray to God in the Struggle
If you struggle to believe God’s word, tell Him in prayer. Ask God to open your heart so that His word will come alive as you meditate on it. This will build your faith. Romans 10:17So faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ. [5] Supernatural transformation happens as we spend time in God’s Word. Don’t be surprised your faith grows as you spend time in God’s word.
