The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Today’s story shows the power of generosity. Genesis 13: Finally Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not allow this conflict to come between us or our herdsmen. After all, we are close relatives! The whole countryside is open to you. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate. If you want the land to the left, then I’ll take the land on the right. If you prefer the land on the right, then I’ll go to the left.” [1]

Abram initiated a possible solution to the conflict between his herdsmen and Lot’s herdsmen. They were family, and their relationship was more valuable than worldly wealth. As the elder, Abram had every right to choose what he wanted and assign Lot to what was left. Instead, we see Abram selflessly and generously giving Lot the first choice. Abram chose peace over wealth to bring an end to the conflict.

Trusting the Promise

How could Abram be so generous? His trust in God’s provision had grown since the Egyptian trip. God had given Abram amazing promises. Genesis 12: I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you…I will give this land to your descendants.” [2]

While Abram had a lapse of faith in Egypt, he had learned from his failure and was now worshipping God again. Abram could step aside for Lot because he now trusted God would provide and fulfill His promises. There was no fear of lack, so Abram could be generous in his offer.

The Generous Steward

Abram demonstrated generosity by giving Lot the first choice of land, showing the importance of selflessness in relationships. This act of kindness shows a faith approach to stewardship, where material possessions are viewed through the lens of God’s provision and the greater good. We can embrace generosity when dealing with others in times of conflict because we trust God’s provision.

1 Timothy 6: 17 Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. 18 Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 19 By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.[3]

All we have is a gift from God. If we have earned something, it is because God enabled us with His gifts. Jesus is our model of generosity. He gave all of Himself for the sake of humanity. Jesus gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb for our sins. How might your generosity resolve conflicts and strengthen relationships in your life? Prioritizing peace over possessions demonstrates a trust that God will provide and has a plan.
