The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

We see Abram navigating conflict between himself and Lot. Genesis 13: Lot, who was traveling with Abram, had also become very wealthy with flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, and many tents. But the land could not support both Abram and Lot with all their flocks and herds living so close together. So disputes broke out between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. At that time Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land. [1]

Both Abram and Lot had gained wealth in Egypt. While they lived as nomads, the Canaanites and Perizzites controlled the land and, most likely, the wells. It appears that the available land for Abram and Lot was limited, which led to conflict between the herdsmen While material blessings are beneficial, they can cause strife if not managed wisely. We must be aware that success and blessings can sometimes create divisions. When this happens, it is best to refocus on gratitude and stewardship.

Seek Peace Proactively

It is not unusual for uncontrolled disputes to escalate. The text specifically notes that the Canaanites and Perizzites were their neighbors. They were watching what was happening between these newcomers. The two sides continued quarreling over resources even as the neighbors watched. This could put Abram and Lot in a vulnerable position. It also hurt their testimony to God. Unbelievers always rejoice when believers quarrel.

Abram seems to be observing the conflicts. As the elder, he recognized the signs of tension and knew they would need to manage these disputes before they became even more harmful. He valued peace and harmony and realized they needed to set up boundaries. This would mean that they would have to separate.

Pursue Peace in Conflict

This story foreshadows Jesus’ call to reconciliation and peace, as seen in His teachings on love and conflict resolution. Just as Abraham acted selflessly, we are called to follow Christ’s example of humility and love in resolving conflicts. Matthew 5: God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. [2]

Christ gave up His position in heaven to come to live as a human and die for our sins. He did this out of love for us. His actions restore our relationship with God. Because we have been forgiven, we are to forgive others. This is not easy, but Christ’s love enables us to move to restore our relationships with others.

Colossian 3: 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. [3]
