Trusting in God’s promises leads to a life of blessings and fulfillment. This is far beyond our vision, just as He promised to Abram. As our story unfolds, Abram gives Lot the choice of land. Lot takes the more prosperous land for his herds and flocks. Most of us may have been disappointed if we had walked in Abram’s sandals, but something special happened in his heart.
Genesis 13:14 After Lot had gone, the Lord said to Abram, “Look as far as you can see in every direction—north and south, east and west. 15 I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession. 16 And I will give you so many descendants that, like the dust of the earth, they cannot be counted! 17 Go and walk through the land in every direction, for I am giving it to you.” [1]
Lift Your Eyes
Abram’s nephew Lot lifted his eyes, saw what the world had to offer, and took the best land. The Lord invited Abram to lift his eyes and see what heaven offers. God renewed and expanded His promise of land to Abram. The Lord also calls us to look up, as Paul tells us. Ephesians 1: 3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.[2]
Looking up to what God has for us today and in eternity changes our perspective, especially during times of doubt or challenge. As believers in Jesus, we have an inheritance that no one can take away! The poorest person in the world is rich beyond measure when the Holy Spirit comes and lives in their heart. As we lift our eyes to focus on the Lord, we shift away from immediate concerns and toward the promises He has prepared for us that are beyond our imagination.
God’s Abundance
As Abram lifted his eyes, the Lord gave him a glimpse of His vast abundance. The Lord again reminded Abram of the vastness of His promises that stretched far beyond what he could see. God’s promise to Abram was not only physical but God’s faithfulness and provision.
God also makes us promises as we place our faith in Him. John 3:16For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.[3] God’s promise of eternal life illustrates the limitless nature of God’s generosity.
He promised Abram an abundance of descendants, a blessing extending into a future beyond a lifetime. God’s promises are fulfilled in Christ, blessing all who believe in Him. Satan seeks to use situations, people, and things to tempt and worsen us, while the Lord aims to test and improve us.
