The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

James 1:17 — Daily Wisdom for Wednesday, October 31, 2018

What is the greatest gift you have ever received? As I have matured both in age and spiritually, I realize that Jesus is the greatest gift I will ever receive. The Lord is the great giver who gives to us because He loves us.

The Great Giver gave Israel the Promised Land

The Israelite spies understand God promised them the land. They tell Rahab that God is about to fulfill the promise that He had given Abraham years before. Joshua 2: 14 “We offer our own lives as a guarantee for your safety,” the men agreed. “If you don’t betray us, we will keep our promise and be kind to you when the Lord gives us the land.” [1]

Other Biblical Example of God as Giver

James writes that every good and perfect gift is from the Lord. James 1:17 Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. 18 He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession. [2]

It is the Lord’s nature to give and there is no greater gift than Jesus who came into this world so we could be saved from our sins. The greatest gift cost the giver everything according to the Apostle Paul. Romans 3:24 Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ. God sacrificed Jesus on the altar of the world to clear that world of sin.[3]

The Great Giver’s Gift to Us

The amazing gift of Jesus is a gift only the Lord could give. We could not pay the price for our sins, so the Lord took our place and paid the price for us. When Jesus said on the cross “It is finished” it meant the debt of our sin had been paid in full. Salvation is a gift that keeps on giving because those who place their faith in Jesus have eternal life. Every day we will spend in heaven will be because of this wonderous gift.

God is a giver and a forgiver. He’s the most generous One you’ll ever encounter. One of the most powerful ways God shows His generosity is by forgiving our sins. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, we’ve been given a relationship with God. Since He’s generous to us, we can learn to be generous back to Him and generous to the people around us. Praise the Lord!
