Do you treasure the words of Jesus? I think there are times when we take the precious words of Jesus for granted. I remember reading a story about a Navy pilot who was a prisoner for many years after being shot down. He had been in church all his life but now had to rely on his memory to bring back the treasure of God’s word. He wished he had listened more carefully and memorized more of the Lord’s word.
Other prisoners also worked to recall Bible verses, sharing what they remembered. After his release, he indicated God’s word sustained him through this great trail. God’s word will also support you through the trials of life.
Jesus Calls the People to Listen Closely
Jesus had something significant to say, and he prefaced his teaching by telling the people to listen very carefully. Mark 4:24Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. 25 To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.” [1]
Is the Lord calling you to pay close attention as you read this? Be mindful because He has something important to say to you. I am amazed at how God intervenes in our life when we least expect it and how God speaks to us in different ways.
Why Did Jesus Teach in Parables?
Many in the crowds that mobbed Jesus came to get healed or see something new. They were spiritually shallow. But some were seeking more profound spiritual truth. As a result, Jesus taught in parables. If one was shallow, these sounded like forgettable stories. On the other hand, God would reveal more if one was willing to meditate on the deeper meaning. Today, if we are eager to go deeper with God, He will reveal more to us.
As You Seek the Lord, He Gives You More
God’s word is supernatural, living, and alive and speaks to us today. As we are willing to seek God, He will give us insight as we read the word. Suddenly, passages will come alive and apply to our situation. As you are willing to go deeper, there will be greater depths to plumb.
Jesus desires to give the blessing of growing in faith. Romans 12:2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. [2]
I find it amazing that as you let God change the way you think, He can unfold His plan for your life. Go to the Lord in prayer today and humbly ask Him to take you deeper into His word and your relationship with Him. Be ready for the Lord to take you on a great adventure.
